Success story

Skills Training for Employment and Post-Secondary Program

A job seeker came into the STEP program with some reservations. He had no work experience and was concerned that he would not be able to keep up in the program.

The Employment Skills program includes a training portion and he was worried about not being able to complete it. He did struggle with some of the training, but 1:1 help from a counsellor was always available, and this benefitted him greatly.

At the end of Employment Skills training, he was offered a position at a large local Community Centre. The Community Centre hosts large events, concerts and hockey games. Our job seeker was very excited about this job opportunity, but knew he needed Smart Serve certification to move forward in the hiring process. He had previously tried this certification multiple times without success.

This time, he took part in hours of 1:1 time with our Youth Counsellors, working on studying and preparing for his Smart Serve exam. Although his score improved each time he took the test, he was not passing.

However, STEP Counsellors contacted Smart Serve to ask for an accommodation. An accommodation was granted to allow reading the test questions to our job seeker.

With support during the proctored test, he then passed his certification and moved on to his job opportunity! This job seeker was successful in the program and in this job opportunity because of the 1:1 support and advocacy offered by our Youth Counsellors.
