Skills Training for Employment and Post-Secondary (STEP Program)

Empowering youth with skills, confidence, knowledge, and ongoing support

For youth transitioning to full-time work or post secondary

The goal of this program is to empower and support youth with the transition to work or post-secondary with skills, confidence and knowledge

The STEP Program is for

  • Ages 15–30
  • Not in school or employed
  • Living in Durham Region
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person who have been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Aiming toward full-time work or post-secondary

Program features

  • Up to 21 PAID weeks: participants are paid during up to 7 weeks employment services and/or skills training, followed by a 12-week competitive-quality employment opportunity or support for post-secondary
  • Earn certifications such as Smart Serve, WHMIS, Basic Food Safety Training, Working at Heights, First Aid and CPR
  • Financial support is available
  • Referrals to other John Howard Society programs and services for long-term support
  • Stay connected with counsellors through phone, text, email, and zoom
